- Graduated from the School of Law at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1985
- Worked in the general practice of law with the law firm of Whisnant, Simmons, Groome, Tuttle, Pike, and Barlow in Lenoir, North Carolina from 1985 until 1992
- Practiced law, primarily in the area of family law, with the law firm of Tate, Young, Morphis, Bach, and Taylor in Hickory, North Carolina from 1992 until 1996
- Practiced law as a solo practitioner focusing primarily in the area of family law in Hickory, North Carolina from 1996 through 2005
- Is a board-certified family financial mediator conducting mediations for divorcing spouses represented by other law firms
